How One Intervention Opened Her World-Meet Elizabeth Bonker, a nonverbal autistic student who just gave her Valedictorian speech at Rollins College.
Meet Elizabeth Bonker, Rollins College 2022 Valedictorian. She is affected by non-speaking autism and wrote her commencement address by typing with one finger and a communication partner holding her keyboard. Her inspiring speech encourages her class to give their life for service, just as Mr. Roger's so dedicated his life. And she encourages us all to see the worth in everyone they meet.
"If you see the worth in me, you can see the worth in everyone you meet."
The one intervention of learning to use type to speech, has opened a whole new world for Elizabeth. May all teachers, tutors, and therapists be encouraged...that ONE intervention can have a profound affect on a student...and to treat each student and each intervention as such...profound.
Congrats to Elizabeth, who is offering the world her unique perspective on education and inspiring us all to serve this world with purpose, see all people, hear all people, accept and acknowledge all people for the wondrous beings that they are!
Elizabeth will dedicate her life to assisting other nonverbal autistic students worldwide in communication through her nonprofit called Communication 4 ALL.
"I am one of the lucky few non-speaking autistics who have been taught to type. That one critical intervention unlocked my mind from its silent cage enabling to communicate and to be educated."
