Build: A Kindergarten & 1st Grade Early Reading Intervention

From the Luke Waites Center for Dyslexia and Learning Disorders at the Scottish Rite Children’s Hospital

Build: A K-1 Early Reading Intervention is a comprehensive intervention for students who have been identified at risk for dyslexia. Created by the staff of the Luke Waites Center for Dyslexia and Learning Disorders at Scottish Rite Children’s Hospital, this 100 lesson reading intervention is offered in an individual and small group therapy session.

Build: A K-1 Early Reading Intervention incorporates the five essential components of reading intervention which include alphabet instruction, letter and sound knowledge, phonological awareness, vocabulary, and comprehension. This curriculum is delivered using a direct, systematic, cumulative, multisensory method of content introduction and practice to meet the literacy needs of younger children. Therapy sessions are offered three to four times weekly for forty-five minutes .

The Building Blocks of Build:

  • Alphabet Instruction

    Children will engage in intensive activities focused on identifying and manipulating letters, developing sequencing skills, and mastering alphabetization.

  • Letter & Sound Knowledge

    Through multisensory instructional methods, children will receive direct instruction on individual letters and sounds, which will help them learn to decode new words and start reading sentences.

  • Phonological Awareness

    They will explore the relationships between speech and sound, along with distinct sound production, through explicit instruction in concepts such as phoneme manipulation, rhyme, alliteration, and spelling.

  • Vocabulary

    With direct teaching strategies that utilize context clues, children will expand their vocabulary and learn to infer the meanings of unfamiliar words.

  • Comprehension

    Additionally, children will learn specific strategies to identify essential components of a story.

  • A Bright & Colorful Classroom Environment

    Therapy sessions take place in a cozy and colorful classroom, conducted by Joanna, a dyslexia specialist and certified K-12 reading specialist.
