QUESTION: What is the difference between dyslexia therapy and literacy support services?
ANSWER:
Dyslexia therapy is an intensive 60 minute session which specifically follows Take Flight: A Comprehensive Intervention for Students with Dyslexia curriculum. Dyslexia therapy is offered four days, weekly for students formally diagnosed with dyslexia by an educational psychologist. Dyslexia therapy also serves students at risk of dyslexia and awaiting a formal diagnosis. Sometimes a diagnosis can take several months and up to a year. Enrolling your child with significant reading difficulties in this option is best. Baseline assessments are offered for students who participate in therapy and serve as a great resource for your child’s classroom teachers in providing content about the Take Flight curriculum and valuable information about dyslexia, dysgraphia, and how to accommodate your child in the school setting.
Literacy Support Services- is a 60 minute session for students who need extra assistance in a specific aspect of literacy. All students who elect this option will participate in a variety of informal, baseline reading assessments to determine their reading strengths and weaknesses. From these informal assessments, an individualized plan is created using only the best, research based instructional practices. Literacy support sessions typically occur 2 times per week, and can be be one-on-one or amongst a small group setting. Instruction is tailored to each child’s needs.

Through personal evaluations, student inventories, and expertise, Rainbow Reading will create an individualized learning plan for each student. Rainbow’s reading instruction is…
* Creative * Engaging * Multi-sensory
Curriculum includes quality literature, meaningful stories, and creative instruction. Parents will be provided with ongoing, formative assessment results and activities and games for home practice so the entire family can take part in the process and progress of each child’s reading success.
The ultimate goal is to equip students with skills and strategies to tackle subject specific areas of literacy to increase their confidence and enhance their academic performance. Literacy support services generally serve students not diagnosed with dyslexia nor at risk of dyslexia. This targeted instruction is to provide a “boost” for students in a specific area that needs improvement.
