Build: A Kindergarten & 1st Grade Early Reading Intervention
From the Luke Waites Center for Dyslexia and Learning Disorders at the Scottish Rite Children’s Hospital
Build: A K-1 Early Reading Intervention is a comprehensive intervention for students who have been identified at risk for dyslexia. Created by the staff of the Luke Waites Center for Dyslexia and Learning Disorders at Scottish Rite Children’s Hospital, this 100 lesson reading intervention is offered in an individual and small group therapy session.
Build: A K-1 Early Reading Intervention incorporates the five essential components of reading intervention which include alphabet instruction, letter and sound knowledge, phonological awareness, vocabulary, and comprehension. This curriculum is delivered using a direct, systematic, cumulative, multisensory method of content introduction and practice to meet the literacy needs of younger children. Therapy sessions are offered three to four times weekly for forty-five minutes .
The Building Blocks of Build:

Alphabet Instruction
Children will become immersed in intensive identification and manipulation of letters, sequencing skills, and alphabetizing.

Letter & Sound Knowledge
Using multisensory methods of instruction, children will participate in direct instruction of individual letters and sounds to develop their ability to decode new words and begin reading sentences.

Phonological Awareness
Children will learn the speech to sound relationships and distinct sound production with explicit instruction in concepts such phoneme manipulation, rhyme, alliteration, and spelling.

Vocabulary
With direct teaching of strategies using context clues, children will learn new vocabulary and the be able to infer the meaning of unfamiliar words.

Comprehension
Children will learn specific learning strategies to identify essential story components.

A Bright & Colorful Classroom Environment
Therapy sessions are conducted within a cozy and colorful learning classroom with Joanna, a dyslexia specialist and a certified K-12th grade reading specialist.
