Born Hungry- Julia Child Becomes “The French Chef” -Written by Alex Prud’homme and Illustrated by Sarah Green
This colorful and whimsical book tells the story of America’s favorite French chef. The book describes Julia’s journey about being born hungry, but definitely not being born a natural and talented chef.
Towering over six feet tall, Julia played basketball and only knew how to boil water in her younger years. She even worked as a US spy during World War II. She met the love of her life, Paul Child, a creative painter and photographer in the OSS, and he swept her off her feet!
They traveled the world during their early years together, and while working alongside her husband, she created her first recipe of SHARK REPELLENT so that the US sailors could be kept safe in the waters. It actually worked!
Julia and Paul moved back to America after the war, where she signed up for her first class on how to make pancakes and hamburgers. And when she decided to cook her first meal for Paul, it consisted of cow brains simmered in red wine. Needless to say, it was a major flop and she decided she MUST learn to cook well.
It was after a brief residency in Paris with Paul that she had tasted the most incredible meal of her life and decided on the spot to not only eat as much French food as she could, but also learn to cook it.
So she signed up for classes at the famous Le Cordon Bleu cooking school. She was the only woman in her class. Immediately she became the best and brightest student, cooking everything under the watchful eye of Chef Max Bugnard. She eventually opened up her own cooking school and starred in her own cooking show, where the whole world fell in love with her through the television.
A delightful and bright story as robust as Julia Child herself. You’ll learn not only her story, but perhaps be inspired to start your own. As Julia said, “No one is born a great cook, one learns by doing…Find something you’re passionate about and stay tremendously interested in it.”
An inspiring tale for anyone who has a wish and a dream. A story of resilience, perseverance, and passion. What we learn from Julia is that one is never too old to learn something new and find one’s calling. Afterall, life is a simmering pot filled with possibility, color, and vibrant opportunities….she’d tell us to go out and eat it up!
