Letter Builders (Uppercase)

This alphabet builder set is for building uppercase letter recognition and can also be used to for beginning letter sounds. It is fun for children to engage individually, as a small group, and use as a simple center activity as well.

The box contains wooden pieces and the twenty-six alphabet cards.

Choose about five cards to start with. Model how each child can manipulate the pieces to fit the letters. Do this a few times, watching students practice this skill. Use the following activities as fun and effective extensions.

  1. Build * Say * Trace * Build Again-This activity is exactly what it sounds like. Students will build the letter with the wooden pieces, say the letter and the sound, clear their card, and then trace the letter with their finger.

  2. Build & Take Away- Have students build the letter with the wooden pieces and then have them clear the card and build it without the card and without looking at the card. They can then turn the card over and check their work.

  3. Spell My Name-Have students spell their name using the letter cards. Then have the students build them with the wooden pieces. Recite the letters that make up their name, and see if they can build their name again without using the cards too.

  4. Alphabet Order- Have the students arrange the letter cards in alphabet order. Select a few letters for them to build using or without using the cards.

  5. What’s Missing-Arrange several alphabet cards in alphabetical order. Remove one of the cards and then have the child build the missing letter.

  6. Think-Pair-Share- Play this game in pairs. Pair up the children, and pass out two to three alphabet cards to each pair. Encourage them to build the letters together and then think of words that start with each letter. Continue to play until several letters are built!

These Letter Builders can be purchased at Lakeshore Learning. Enjoy!
