Ignoring the science of reading and the grave effects for the struggling reader.

APM Reports: Sold a Story by Emily Hanford
I hate to admit it, but for years I was a big cheerleader for the balanced literacy approach. It was what was taught in my master's program and seemed like an effective, fun, and engaging approach to teaching reading.

But what I learned to discover after training to become an academic language therapist, specifically to work with students with language based learning differences like dyslexia, it was the wrong approach.

Listen to Emily Hanford's podcast titled Sold a Story, and learn about the history of our country's reading instruction. How everything from politics, to money, to misinformation directed what and how we taught and continue to teach our children to read.

The science of reading has been around for a very long time, but our country has decided not to pay attention nor intentionally look at what science says about how the brain learns to read.

I hope this podcast provides you with more insight and information to consider the grave effects of ignoring the science of reading, especially the devastating effects for the dyslexic community and struggling readers.
