Spelling Assessments and Accommodations for Dyslexic Students

Many dyslexic students struggle with spelling. If a classroom teacher does not understand dyslexia nor is familiar in how to accommodate and assess a dyslexic student in learning new spelling skills, the child can become overwhelmed, discouraged, and dread school.

Some of the most successful authors of our time had difficulty with spelling and handwriting. Spelling difficulties have nothing to do with a student's intelligence. They have difficulty with working memory, letter recall, letter sequence, decoding, and phonemic difficulties.

I have had a few parents ask me for advice in how a classroom teacher can accommodate and creatively support a student with spelling difficulties in the classroom. I think it's important to share these and please add more suggestions to the comment section below!
