Beginning the Road to Reading

Many parents want to know, "What should my child know in the primary grades?"

They want to know how to assist and support their child to make sure that their reading ability is moving along as it should.

Research has shown that the two best predictors of early reading success are alphabet recognition and phonemic awareness.

Fun Fact: Did you know that our alphabet is 4,000 years old? It has evolved from oral language and began with the beautiful hieroglyphs from the Ancient Egyptians, where it passed through the Sinaitic people, the Phoenicians, the Greeks, and onto the Romans!

We want children to be able to name and identify all of the letters of the alphabet, both uppercase and lowercase letters. And while its great they can SING the alphabet, true alphabet recognition is when they can distinguish the letters out of order, at random, and sequence them WITHOUT singing the ABC song.
